This silk clutch bag has been designed exclusively for the National Gallery shop by Leeds-based designer Clare Webster.
The design is inspired by the opulence, luxury and colouring of the costumes worn by the subjects in many of Gossaert’s work featured in the Gallery.
Clare was motivated by Gossaert's sculptural approach to the folds and drapes of the fabric he painted, which echoes her own training as a sculptor. Her chosen colours reference the Adoration of the Kings while adding a contemporary feel.
The clutch bag is handmade in fine dupioni silk with machine stitching to enhance the appearance. This two-tone silk (also known as silk dupioni) shimmers as the bag is moved, adding an extra dimension to the vintage-style accessory. The result is a designer handbag that’s more than just fashionable; it’s a work of art!
