Gossaert’s imagery of opulence, luxury and colouring inspired Leeds-based designer Clare Webster to create two silk clutch bags exclusively for The National Gallery shop.
Clare was motivated by Gossaert's sculptural approach to the folds and drapes of the fabric he painted, which echoes her own training as a sculptor. Her chosen colours for these silk clutch bags reference the original painting while adding a contemporary feel.
The clutch bag is handmade in fine dupioni silk with machine stitching to enhance the appearance. This two-tone silk (also known as silk dupioni) shimmers as the bag is moved, adding an extra dimension to the vintage-style accessory. The result is a designer handbag that’s more than just fashionable; it’s a work of art!
