The Hoerengracht, by Ed Kienholz and Nancy Reddin Kienholz, is an installation artwork depicting Amsterdam's red light district, with glowing windows, dark alleyways and shady occupants. In the formal surroundings of the National Gallery, The Hoerengracht is an incongruous sight, but this film reveals surprising parallels with the Gallery's collection of Dutch paintings of the seventeenth century.
This art DVD introduces the Kienholzes, an innovative artistic partnership who worked together for over 20 years until Ed's death in 1994. We travel to Idaho where Ed and Nancy worked, and see The Hoerengracht unpacked in preparation for the National Gallery exhibition. We also return to Amsterdam, which inspired The Hoerengracht, and see how the city has since changed since Ed and Nancy's visits there in the 1980s.
Parents and teachers should be aware that this Kienholz art DVD discusses adult themes.
