This delightful charm necklace has been produced exclusively for The National Gallery. It’s part of the Eclectic Eccentricity collection of vintage and contemporary jewellery created by designer Lucy Averill.
Inspired by the seascapes of J.M.W. Turner, the necklace consists of a silver sailing ship, a red resin rose and a small glass pearl bead. All three charms hang on an 18-inch silver chain. Together, they conjure up images of romantic liaisons and long-distance love.
Joseph Turner’s affection for the sea is evident throughout his life, with his oil painting ‘Fishermen at Sea’ exhibited at the Royal Academy when he was just 21. A continuing interest in using brilliant colours as the main constituent of his landscapes led to Turner becoming known as ‘the painter of light’.
Our ship necklace captures the spirit and the subject of many Turner paintings. It’s bound to attract admiring glances and will complement any outfit, whether casual or formal.
