The Duc d'Orléans (1810 - 1842) was the eldest son of King Louis-Philippe.

Ingres painted a three-quarter-length portrait of the duke between 1841 and April 1842 which is still in the family's possession. When the duke was killed in a carriage accident, many replicas of this earlier portrait were ordered, of which this picture is one. It is probably the joint work of Ingres and his assistants, and it is the only one where a cloak covers most of the uniform.
