Inspired by the seafaring themes in many of J.M.W. Turner’s paintings, this anchor necklace has been designed specifically for the National Gallery and is part of Lucy Averill’s Eclectic Eccentricity jewellery collection. The large brass anchor is covered with a hand-finished vintage-looking patina, while a raw brass bird and pale yellow resin rose add to the ‘sailor’ motif. A gold-plated 18-inch chain completes the necklace.

Joseph Turner has become one of the best-loved English Romantic artists, even though his artistic style and behaviour both caused controversy during his life. He’s often referred to as ‘the painter of light’ because of the way he used colour to capture weather conditions in his landscapes and seascapes.

The sailors in Turner’s paintings would have appreciated the anchor, swallow and rose on the necklace as images traditionally associated with naval life – although today they’re just as likely to represent the qualities of steadfastness, loyalty and love. However you choose to interpret the distinctive design of this jewellery, our exclusive Anchors Away necklace is certain to be a much-loved gift (or even a special treat for yourself!).
