This lavish and abundant arrangement of flowers includes tulips, roses, carnations and lilies, as well as strawberries. As these flowers bloom at different times of the year the artist must have painted this picture over a period of time, or after drawings from nature.
The painting has been slightly cut down on the right: the last letters of the signature are missing.
Walscappelle specialised in painting still lifes of flowers and fruit. His pictures are rare; he seems to have given up painting shortly after he was appointed to a municipal post in Amsterdam in 1673.
