This sentimental and apparently moralistic scene of a girl tenderly holding a lamb, a symbol of gentleness and innocence, is belied by the girl's bared shoulder and parted lips.

This is an unfinished late work, and there is a pentimento (alteration to an area already painted) visible next to the girl's hand.
