Known chiefly as a painter of biblical scenes, allegorical and mythological subjects, Willem de Poorter in this work possibly depicts an allegory of Merit in the guise of the just ruler. This concept was similarly represented in an illustration of Cesare Ripa's 'Iconologia', which was translated into Dutch in 1644.
