This quickly executed painting with its reduced colour scheme and broad handling of detail is characteristic of the so-called 'monochromatic' phase of Dutch still life painting, of which Jan van Goyen was one of the main exponents.

In the past the attribution to van Goyen has been questioned. The painting is, however, almost certainly an authentic work of about 1629, as the monogram appears to be integral to the painting.
