The dead birds include song thrushes, jays and a redstart. The dead game includes a hare, duck and partridge. The owl is a Little Owl, which was commonly used as a decoy bird in hunting. The dogs are a type of spaniel.

De Coninck's stylistic development is unclear and so it is difficult to date his paintings with any precision. This picture is, however, similar to game scenes painted during his stay in Rome and so probably dates from the period of his residence in the city (about 1672-94). It has, in addition, an Italian provenance.
