This painting, together with the Boudin's 'Beach Scene, Trouville' (1860 - 70), were both owned by Monet. It is probable that they were not conceived as a pair, and were painted at different times. Here the ladies appear to wear bustles, a fashion of the 1870s, whereas in the former work the presence of a crinoline suggests a date in the 1860s.
