This work relates to a group of paintings made by Caravaggio during his first decade in Rome, for a group of patrons in the circle of Cardinal Francesco del Monte. These include several paintings of young boys, loosely draped and usually half length, which almost certainly have erotic overtones.

The subject of this painting may have an allegorical meaning, and possibly refers to the pain that can derive from love.
