The title is from a print of 1790. Cornard Wood, the name by which the picture is generally known, was first apparently used in 1828, but there is no good evidence that the church tower in the background is that of Great Cornard, near Sudbury.

The picture is influenced by Dutch painting, particularly by the landscapes of Wynants and Ruisdael. It is probably a very early work, painted in 1748.
