Our Stag Necklace, with its green quartz and hematite decoration, echoes the natural theme and colours often found in Titian’s paintings. It’s from the Mirabelle jewellery collection and has been designed and made in the UK using material from fair trade suppliers.
Titian dominates 16th century Venetian art. Born Tiziano Vecellio, he started his artistic training when he was around 10 years old. As a young adult, his expertise led to commissioning for portraits and religious works – and he later became the official painter for a number of European courts.
In 1553 he started painting a series of mythological pictures for Philip II of Spain, using Ovid’s poetic Metamorphoses as inspiration. Flora and fauna are depicted in realistic detail, despite the fantasy of scenes that show the hunter Actaeon eventually being transformed into a stag.
This Mirabelle stag necklace, which features a deer pendant with green quartz and hematite on an 85cm long gold-plated chain, also combines symbolism with an obvious love of nature. It would make a welcome gift for any occasion or a distinctive reminder of the National Gallery’s Titian works.
