It reminds us of Henri Rousseau’s series of jungle scenes. His best-known painting is called “Surprised!” and can be seen in the National Gallery. It shows a tiger preparing to pounce on an unseen prey while a tropical storm rages around it. Curiously, although it’s been rumoured that Rousseau visited Mexico during the 1860s, it seems most likely he used illustrations and the Paris botanical garden as inspiration.
