Leon Kossoff : Drawing from Painting Exhibition Catalogue
Born in 1926, Leon Kossoff is one of the most significant British painters of the past fifty years. He is best known as a painter of the London landscape, and of his family and friends in the studio.
For his paintings of London, he returns over and over again to particular locations that are significant to him, each time completely reassessing his subject. He has brought a similar, cyclic approach to his many studies from the National Gallery's collection, which he has made regularly since his days as a student in the 1950s.
These drawings and prints form part of a dialogue with Old Master paintings that has extended over the artist's career. This book explores how these studies have become a vital part of Kossoff's own work, and presents five previously unexhibited paintings alongside a careful selection of works made from earlier artists including Poussin, Goya, Veronese and Cezanne.
