Tim Gardner - New Works Exhibition Catalogue
Special Price: Reduced from £4.95 to £2.99 for a limited period of time.
Canadian artist Tim Gardner (b. 1973) burst onto the New York art scene in 2001 with his first solo show at the 303 Gallery in New York and quickly established his international reputation.
His realistic and deftly executed watercolours, paintings and pastels, often based on snapshot photographs of family and friends, provide rich, provocative and original commentary on such traditional themes as youth, masculinity, friendship, the family and life.
His compelling gift for identifying resonate images from contemporary life along with a rare mastery of watercolour and pastel technique, led to an invitation to spend time at the National Gallery, London, where he immersed himself in the collection in 2005.
The 20 watercolours and pastels in this book arise from this confrontation, where Gardner's works do not explicitly acknowledge Old Master sources by everywhere are informed by them. With these paintings, at once deeply personal and coolly appraising, he has extended the range and resonance of his singular art.
Among the featured works are a pastel portrait of Gardner's father, a watercolour depicting bus passengers against the Rocky Mountains, and a group of sublime landscapes.
Christopher Riopelle discusses this new body of work, and situates Gardner's oeuvre within the context of art history, including that of the 'Old Masters'.
