Art in The Making: Degas DVD
Region Free DVD, Plays Worldwide.
This remastered DVD presents two films on Degas from the National Gallery's Audio Visual Department.
Degas was one of the most prolific of artists, renowned for his pictures of ballet dancers, horse-races and intimate scenes of women at their toilette.
The variety and complexity of his output, which included oil painting, pastel, printmaking and sculpture, also make him especially intriguing.
Degas's techniques ranged from the unconventional, such as painting directly onto unprimed canvas, to the experimental, and he mixed media in the 1870s in ways that would not become commonplace until the twentieth century.
It explores the artist's materials and techniques, studying the paintings, pastels, drawings and prints, sometimes aided by infared and X-ray photography.
This DVD vividly reveals colour and texture to show how Degas built up his compositions.
The bonus film Degas: Beyond Impressionism investigates the little-known work of the artist's later years, and highlights his importance for twentieth-century artists such as Picasso.
