A Village by a River in Moonlight

From £15

This moonlight scene has not been identified and is probably not intended to be topographically accurate. Van der Neer's early work was influenced by the landscape painters Joachim (1602 - 1659) and Raphael (1598 - 1657) Camphuysen, whom he knew in Gorinchem, where he had lived before he moved to Amsterdam in 1632. His works are difficult to date but this picture was probably painted in the mid-1640s.
