How do I become a Member?

You can join:

  • Online by credit/debit card or Direct Debit at
  • Onsite by speaking to a member of the Visitor Engagement team; or
  • Onsite Gift Membership through the National Gallery Shop
  • Phone the Membership team Monday to Friday, from 09.00 to 17.00

What are the benefits of Membership
As a Member you benefit from:

    How long does it take to receive my permanent Membership card?
    Please allow approximately 15 working days from date of purchase, or date of activation if you have a Gift Membership. If you have received a temporary Membership card or a Membership confirmation email, you can use this to access all Membership benefits in the meantime.

    Can I lend my Membership card to a friend?
    Membership cards are for the named individual only and are non-transferable. Membership cards should not be passed on to third parties for use.

    What should I do if I misplace my Membership card or if it gets stolen?
    Please contact the Membership team and we will send you a replacement card within 10 working days. If you want to visit the Gallery and you don’t have your Membership card with you, please speak to a Member of our Visitor Engagement team when you arrive.

    How do I change my Membership?
    To benefit from free guest entry and/or to add a second individual to your account, please contact the Membership team who will be happy to help you.

    What is the difference between Joint Membership and Member plus Guest?
    To purchase Joint Membership you and the second named cardholder must live at the same address. You will both receive a card. For Member plus Guest you will receive one card and you can bring a guest with you to exhibitions and events. This guest does not need to reside at the same address and the Member can bring anyone as a guest with them.


    Are all exhibitions free?
    Yes. Members enjoy free, unlimited entry to all exhibitions.

    Do I need to book for exhibitions?
    We encourage all Members to book online in advance on the Members’ website to ensure your preferred entry time to the exhibition. However, you can also turn up on the day and collect a timed ticket. Please note your Membership card is not sufficient for entry to the exhibition; upon arrival present your Membership card at the Ticket Desk and pick up a ticket before heading to the exhibition.

    How many times can I visit the National Gallery exhibitions?
    You may visit the National Gallery exhibitions as many times as you like using your Membership card.

    Can I bring a guest with me to exhibitions?
    Yes. If you have ‘& Guest’ Membership you can bring a guest with you to enjoy exhibitions and events with you. If you have joint Membership plus guest, both you and the additional cardholder can opt to bring a guest. If you would like to add a guest, you can do so for just £28 onsite, online or contact the Membership Team for assistance.

    I have just joined as a Member and want to visit the special exhibition today. Is the Membership valid straight away?
    Yes, if you purchase Membership either online or onsite, you can start using your Membership on the day. If you purchase onsite, you will be given a temporary Membership card, which you can use to collect a ticket to the exhibition. If you join online, simply bring your Membership confirmation email with you to the Gallery and present this at the Ticket Desk to collect a ticket to the exhibition.

    I want to be removed from the mailing lists. How do I do this?
    Please contact the Membership Team and we will remove your contact details from the mailing lists. You may also edit your mailing preferences online at the Members’ website.

    Why do I need to collect a ticket for the exhibition?
    The visitor experience is very important to us and we operate a timed ticketing system for all visitors to exhibitions. This is to ensure an enjoyable experience for everyone. Timed ticketing allows us to monitor the capacity of the exhibition space, protect visitors' health and safety.

    Can I take children into exhibitions with me for free?
    Yes. Children under 12 years have free access to all exhibitions.

    I need a carer to assist me. How can I book a carers ticket for exhibitions?
    If you require a carer’s ticket, this is free of charge. You can either collect a carer’s ticket from our Visitor Engagement team on arrival or you can contact the Membership team in advance of your visit who can book the ticket on your behalf.

    I can’t access the Members’ website
    To log into the Members’ website you will need the email address you registered with us along with your password. Your password will be: a) the one you created in setting up your National Gallery account (if you joined online) b) the one listed in your Membership confirmation email (if you joined onsite or on the phone) c) If you have been given a Gift Membership, you need to set up a National Gallery account – follow the link in your Membership confirmation email if you have not already done so. If you need any assistance, please contact the Membership team.

    How do I keep up-to-date with the latest news and Member offers?

    We send out regular emails to Members with details of upcoming events, exhibitions and special offers. To receive these updates, please ensure we have your email address by updating your details on the ‘Manage my account’ section of the Members’ website or contact the Membership team.

    I want to be removed from the mailing lists. How do I do this?

    You can edit your mailing preferences online at the Members’ website. Go to the ‘Manage my account’ section after you log in. Alternatively, please contact the Membership team and we will remove your contact details from the mailing lists.

    Members’ events and offers

    Are there any special events for Members?
    Yes. Members’ events will be published on the Members’ website and in the e-news.

    Can I pre-book for Members’ events?
    You will be able to book your place for Members’ events online in advance through the Members’ website.

    Are there any special offers for Members?
    Yes. We will keep you updated with a range of offers and exclusive discounts via the Members’ website and e-news. To redeem these offers, please present your Membership card at the relevant sales point.

    Gift aid

    How can I Gift Aid my Membership?
    If you are a UK tax payer, Gift Aid allows us to claim an additional 25p on every £1 of your Membership fee at no extra cost to you. Contact the Membership team for more information.

    Gift Membership

    How do I purchase a Gift Membership?
    You can purchase a Gift Membership online via the National Gallery Shop website or if you would prefer to pick up the Gift Membership pack and take it away with you, please visit one of the National Gallery shops in person.

    I have been given a Gift Membership. What do I do?

    You can find step-by-step instructions on how to activate your Membership within your Gift Membership pack. To activate a Gift Membership, you will need the unique activation code printed on the coloured sticker on your Gift Membership pack. Log on to and click on ‘Activate your Membership’. You will then be prompted to enter your unique code and email address. This creates your account and activates your Membership.

    Membership starts from the date of activation and you will receive your permanent card approximately 15 days after you have activated your Membership. The unique code is important so please keep it safe. We are not able to re-issue a code if it is lost or misplaced.

    Please note, Gift Memberships must be activated within three months of the date of purchase.

    How do I contact the Membership team?

    When is the Membership Office open?
    The Membership team is available Monday to Friday, 9:00 to 17:00. If you are phoning in the evening or over the weekend, you will be directed to a member of the Visitor Engagement team or given the option to leave a message on the Membership voice mail. We will endeavour to respond to email enquiries and voicemails within three working days.

    If you are visiting the Gallery and would like to speak to someone in person about Membership, please go to the Ticket Desk where a member of the Visitor Engagement team will be happy to assist you.
