At the National Gallery Company Ltd we are committed to protecting and sustaining the environment through the way we work and the way we do business.

We constantly seek to improve our footprint, ensuring our products and services have minimal impact on the environment and that we maintain a high degree of ethical sourcing and trading. 

We have a dedicated Green team responsible for monitoring and developing our progress on activity ranging from head office to the end consumer.

Here are some of the ways we are actively engaging and involving our key stakeholders in developing our green agenda.

Product Sourcing

We audit all our suppliers and encourage them to adopt our ethical and sustainable buying policy:

  • Our National Gallery books are produced using FSC accredited suppliers
  • Our National Gallery exhibition catalogues are produced by UK or European suppliers
  • Our calendars are produced using FSC materials
  • Our Christmas cards are produced by a UK and FSC accredited supplier
  • Our cafés and restaurants use and support British produce and ingredients

Shop Bags

We encourage our customers to use their own bags, but if they do need one we offer a variety of environmentally friendly bags.

Our paper carrier bag is made from 40% recycled materials. All our plastic bags are made from 50% recycled materials. We charge 15p for all our plastic bags to continue our commitment to invest in the most environmentally friendly materials.

All our paper bags and packaging is 100% recyclable.

We also offer competitively priced tote bags and bags for life.

Recycle, Re-use, Disposal

We recycle paper, card, plastic, food waste and reuse furniture, fixtures and fittings, visual merchandise props and recycle to colleagues within the sector.

We dispose of responsibly, ensuring minimum environmental impact and minimal use of landfills.

Conserving Energy and Resources

All our office paper and 90% of paper product sold in the shops is FSC assured.

We only work with printers and suppliers who follow ISO 14000.

Our Print on Demand printers are print and paper efficient making best use of ink and paper.

All lighting and power is switched off in the evenings in our head office. Out of hours light saving systems are applied throughout all our shops and cafés and restaurants. We only use LED and energy efficient lighting.

Our warehouse delivers in tote boxes eliminating additional packaging and hold recognised carbon omissions credentials.

We are a proud Member of the Made in Britain campaign supporting & promoting British manufacturing.



Community Investment

We raise funds through our cafés and restaurants to provide water pumps for life time supply of clean water to communities in Africa.
