National Gallery Company Green Statement

At the National Gallery Company Ltd we are committed to protecting and sustaining the environment through the way we work and the way we do business.

We constantly seek to improve our footprint, ensuring our products and services have minimal impact on the environment and that we maintain a high degree of ethical sourcing and trading.

We have a dedicated Green team responsible for monitoring and developing our progress on activity ranging from head office to the end consumer.

Here are some of the ways we are actively engaging and involving our key stakeholders in developing our green agenda:

Product Sourcing

We audit all our suppliers and encourage them to adopt our ethical and sustainable buying policy

  • 80% of our merchandise is sourced through UK based suppliers
  • 80% of our National Gallery books are produced using FSC assured paper
  • 70% of our National Gallery books are produced by UK or European printers
  • All our calendars are printed by a UK carbon neutral company

Our Christmas cards are produced in the UK by an FSC accredited supplier. All cards and boxes are made using fully recyclable materials and 100% bio-degradable cellulose acetate. Cello packs are made from a form of corn starch or cellulose acetate

Our cafés and restaurants use and support British produce and ingredients

All disposables used our cafés and restaurants (i.e coffee cups, bottles and food packaging) are compostable and/or recyclable

Shop Bags

We encourage our customers to use their own bags, but if they do need one we offer a variety of environmentally friendly bags

All our paper bags and packaging are100% recyclable

Our paper carrier bag is made from 40% recycled materials. All our plastic bags are made from 50% recycled materials. We charge from 10p for our plastic bags to continue our commitment to invest in the most environmentally friendly materials

We also offer competitively priced tote bags and bags for life

Recycle, Re-use, Disposal

We recycle paper, card, plastic, food waste and reuse furniture, fixtures and fittings, visual merchandise props and recycle to colleagues within the sector

We dispose of responsibly, ensuring minimum environmental impact and minimal use of landfills

Our POS and shop signage is 100% recyclable

Conserving Energy and Resources

All our office paper and 90% of paper product sold in the shops is FSC assured

We only work with printers and suppliers who follow ISO 14000

Our Print on Demand printers are print and paper efficient making best use of ink and paper

All lighting and power is switched off in the evenings in our head office. Out of hours light saving systems are applied throughout all our shops and cafés and restaurants. We only use LED and energy efficient lighting

Our warehouse delivers in tote boxes eliminating additional packaging and hold recognised carbon omissions credentials

Community Investment

For every kilogram of coffee beans used in our cafés and restaurants 5p goes towards supporting coffee farming communities in Africa through an initiative run by the coffee supplier
