A Month in Siena
At nineteen, Matar was studying the great paintings of the Sienese School in London when his father, an opponent to the Gaddafi regime, was captured in Cairo and imprisoned in Libya. He was never seen again. Matar turned to art as a refuge, and twenty five years later he visited the birthplace of those paintings.
A Month in Siena explores the relationship between Matar and the city, while considering his own grief. Matar first encountered Sienese painting at the National Gallery, visiting at lunchtimes and spending an hour studying just one painting. This profound and moving book contemplates the bonds between art and life.
