Altarpieces Advent Calendar
Celebrate each day in anticipation of Christmas with the Altarpieces Advent Calendar.
Open a window daily and reveal a detail from the National Gallery Collection, including Pisanello’s The Vision of Saint Eustace, Monet’s Lavacourt under Snow and Caspar David Friedrich’s Winter Landscape.
The main calendar doors open to reveal Duccio's The Virgin and Child with Saints Dominic and Aurea.
Duccio was the leading artist of fourteenth-century Siena. His style is characterised by elegant, flowing lines, soft colours and tender representations of the divine.
His The Virgin and Child with Saints Dominic and Aurea was made for Niccolò degli Albertini da Prato, Cardinal Bishop of Ostia, and was most probably designed as a portable temporary altarpiece for private prayer while travelling.
