Bartholomeus Spranger: Splendor and Eroticism in Imperial Prague

Bartholomeus Spranger, a Mannerist artist, was known for his erotic depictions of entwined couples, caught in intimate poses. One of the first truly international artists, he worked for powerful and influential clients, including the Emperor Rudolf II in Prague.

In the first publication dedicated for Spranger, his life and career, this book includes depictions of almost all of the artist's paintings and drawings, from museums and private collections.

“Spranger's prolific, international career as a painter draughtsman, printmaker and print designer is carefully traced by Metzler in what is the first comprehensive English-language monograph on the artist. This substantial, heavily illustrated volume makes a significant contribution to our understanding of Spranger and his artistic cultural and socio-political milieu... provides a thorough account of the artist's life and travels.”- The Art Newspaper.
