The first detailed study of the five views of the Fortress of Königstein by Bernardo Bellotto, nephew and pupil of Canaletto.

Bernardo Bellotto (1722–1780) ranks amongst the very greatest view painters of eighteenth-century Europe. Born in Venice, and trained in Canaletto’s workshop, today Bellotto is best known for his large-scale, panoramic views of northern European cities, which he painted with great meticulous attention to architectural detail. This book provides a fascinating overview of Bellotto’s life and career, as well as a detailed account of one of his most prominent commissions: the five spectacular views of the Fortress of Königstein in Dresden for Augustus III, King of Poland, discussing its significance in Bellotto’s career and the paintings’ early history in Britain. The publication marks the historic reuniting of these remarkable views, displayed together for the first time in over 250 years, following the National Gallery’s recent acquisition of The Fortress of Königstein from the North in 2017.
