Doménikos Theotokópoulos, better known as El Greco, is celebrated for his artistic vision during the Spanish Renaissance. This survey of ‘The Greek’s’ artwork explores his career with a focus on the ways in which he constantly reinvented himself.

From his aesthetic education in Venice and Rome to the mixed reception of his mature works in Spain, El Greco: Ambition and Defiance tells an uncompromising tale of the artist’s ambition; including the baroque logistics of his Toledo workshop.

This beautifully illustrated publication pays particular attention to El Greco’s 1577-1579 altarpiece paintings for the Church of Santo Domingo el Antiguo in Toledo and Assumption of the Virgin, which heralded his arrival in Spain. It is filled with scholarly discussion on more than 60 works with essays on the artist’s constantly changing techniques.
