The flowers included in this lavish still life include peonies, roses, iris and tulips. As is often the case, the bouquet has not been painted from life but rather composed in a highly imaginary manner. In the 17th and 18th centuries flowers of this kind would have been too precious to cut from the garden for a short-term display in a vase. The vase has a relief medallion on its side which is decorated with an antique head in profile.
Van Brussel's style is based on the great 17th-century flower painters Jan van Huysum and Jan van Os.
