Giovanni da Rimini: Scenes from the Lives of the Virgin and other Saints
Giovanni da Rimini’s Scenes from the Lives of the Virgin and other Saints is a rare and beautiful panel painting from the late Medieval period. Probably made around 1300–05 by a little-known yet highly original artist working in the Italian port city of Rimini, the panel is rich in narrative detail, displays great iconographic originality and combines the tradition of late Byzantine icons with a new style of painting that shows an increased emphasis on observation and realism.
This publication, which accompanies an exhibition held to mark its acquisition, focuses on the extraordinary qualities of this more than 700-year old picture, and introduces the unique style and skill of the artist who created it. It reassesses the iconography, meaning, and probable patronage of the painting and considers the materials and techniques employed in its making, as well as its original function.
