London Sketchbook: A City Observed
Part of his Sketchbook series, watercolour artist Graham Byfield returns to his native England to paint and sketch the British capital's historic landmarks, and reveal the city's character through studies of inconspicuous private houses, streets, squares, parks and gardens.
With an introduction and captions written by celebrated architectural historian Marcus Binney, the accompanying text provides a brief sketch of London's growth from a Roman settlement to its current status as one of the world's greatest capitals, as well as interesting details on each of the illustrations.
Divided into chapters covering all of London, including Westminster, the West End and the City, West and North London as well as different areas South of the Thames, this is a book about London that captures the essence of a city which charms millions of tourists each year, but whose character is often lost in snapshots and postcards.
Featuring many of the city's best-loved architectural masterpieces, including Wren churches and Foster tower blocks, Londoners and visitors alike will welcome this collection of British paintings, which makes this great metropolis feel like home.
London Sketchbook: A City Observed is one of many art books available from the National Gallery, which include art history books, art exhibition catalogues and gift books.
