Murillo: The Self-Portraits
A collection of essays discussing the only two known self-portraits by Bartolmé Estebán Murillo (1617-1682), one of the major painters of the Spanish Golden Age.
Accompanying the exhibition organised by The National Gallery and The Frick Collection, the book for the first time focuses exclusively on the two self-portraits, which painted over two decades apart are usually overshadowed by Murillo’s religious and genre scene paintings.
The portraits are investigated side-by-side with writers looking at similarities and differences in order to journey through the development of Murillo’s artistic skill and influences, from antiquity and classical modes to more mature and confident artworks.
