One of the participants runs to join his partner at the target, while their opponent is about to bowl. Spectators watch the game and a woman brings out drinks from an inn. The sign outside the inn is a crescent moon.
David Teniers was an immensely successful artist who was court painter to the Archduke Leopold Wilhelm, Governor of the Spanish Netherlands. He specialised in scenes from peasant life which were very popular among Teniers's wealthy, urban clientele, for whom they must have had a decorative and picturesque quality.
