Picasso: Challenging the Past DVD
From his beginnings in the avant-garde atmosphere of Barcelona, through to the later part of his career when he made free interpretations of paintings by Velázquez, Manet and Delacroix, the name of Picasso and the idea of modern art have gone hand in hand.
Early in his career Picasso was seen as an iconoclast who was challenging the conventions of western painting. However, it is now understood that he was in fact deeply concerned with tradition and with his own place in history. Using works displayed in the 2009 exhibition at the National Gallery, this film shows how Picasso consistently made reference to the past in order to ensure that we recognise him as an artist who is claiming descent from a visual heritage that is centuries old.
