Pleasure & Piety: The Art of Joachim Wtewael
This catalogue is published to accompany the first major exhibition of the work of one of the last great Dutch Mannerists, Joachim Wtewael. Popular in his own time, Wtewael became a victim of the changing tides of fashion, and until the late 20th century was neglected by art historical discourse, his paintings remaining unseen in the reserves of museums. This exhibition and book wonderfully bring to light the Utrecht painter’s formidable technical abilities and the great imagination of his incredible volume of work.
This beautifully produced book combines excellently incisive essays alongside vivid reproductions of the masterful colourist’s work: his characteristically contorted bodies and the complexly crowded compositions of his erotically charged biblical and mythological paintings, as well as his portraiture and more domestic scenes. Essays examine this intriguing, ambiguous figure: a man who thrived during time of such inherent conflict, a man who simultaneously politically allied himself to the irrefutably conservative Calvinists and returned time and again in his work to the erotic, and subjects saturated in lust.
‘The definitive study of one of the period’s most significant artists.’ H. Rodney Nevitt Jr., University of Houston.
