Founded in 1848, the secret society known as the Pre-Raphaelites consisted of a group of poets, critics and painters who rejected classical ideas for what they considered to be a more sincere and naturalistic approach to art.
Drawing influence from medieval culture and the jewel-like colours of Quatrrocento art, as well as subjects like love, death and nature, the works this group produced has had a lasting influence on symbolism to this very day.
Heather Birchall's Pre-Raphaelites is a clear and concise resource that includes a detailed introduction to the secret society, a timeline of the most important cultural and political events of the period as well as 100 colour illustrations.
