Published in collaboration with some of the greatest museums in the world, this book is a tribute to the great Raphael on the 500th anniversary of his death. It was written to coincide with a major exhibition on the ‘master of Urbino’ in Rome.

A unique monograph, it tells the story of Raphael in reverse; walking the reader backwards through time from his death in 1520 to his formative years in Urbino, Città di Castello, Perugia and Siena. Though he died at just 37, Raphael has long been recognised as a paragon of the classicism that dominated the European tradition from the High Renaissance until the mid 19th-century.

Each section of the catalogue is curated by a member of an esteemed scientific committee and includes an introductory essay and accompanying entries of the works. It is composed by Matteo Lafranconi, Marzia Faietti, Sylvia Ferino, Alan Brown, Dominique Cordellier, Guido Cornini, Francesco Paolo Di Teodoro, Vincenzo Farinella, Achim Gnann, Barbara Jatta, Alessandro Nova, Nicholas Penny, Mario Scalini, and Alessandro Viscogliosi.
