Reflections: Van Eyck and the Pre-Raphaelites Catalogue

Reflections: Van Eyck and the Pre-Raphaelites Catalogue

Since it first entered the National Gallery, London in 1842, Jan van Eyck’s Arnolfini Portrait (1434) has captivated viewers. Particularly entranced were the idealistic young artists of the new Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, who were drawn to van Eyck’s exquisite oil technique, luminous colour palette and above all, the mirror, which inspired new ways of representing real and illusory space. Reflections examines how this early Netherlandish masterpiece inspired a generation of artists including John Everett Millais, William Holman Hunt, Dante Gabriele Rossetti, Ford Madox Brown and Edward Burne-Jones to create striking new paintings that were both colourful and unconventional.

‘..a very enjoyable read and highly recommended for those interested in the Pre-Raphaelites and the reception of Jan van Eyck.’ - Museum Bookstore
