The Emperor Napoleon I Epic Poster
About this painting
Emile-Jean-Horace Vernet
The Emperor Napoleon I, 1815
Oil on canvas, 72.4 x 59.7 cm
© The National Gallery, London, Presented by the Duke of Leinster, 1889
NG1285
In the original painting hung in the gallery, the emperor Napoleon Bonaparte is depicted wearing the cross and plaque of the Légion d'Honneur and the cross of the Order of the Iron Crown, both of which orders he founded.
This is one of three portraits of Napoleon painted by Vernet for Lord Kinnaird in 1815-16, and may be based on a sketch made from the life by the artist in 1812.
