The painting is an accurate view of the nave and north aisle of the Oude Kerk taken from near the south entrance to the church. At the top of the central window is the coat of arms of the city of Amsterdam: three white crosses of Saint Andrew on black ground flanked by red bands. The congregation sits around the pulpit which is attached to one of the columns in the centre of the nave, listening to a sermon.

In accordance with Calvinist doctrine the interior of the church is white-washed and does not contain any religious imagery.
