The Van Gogh Sisters
After years of living in their brother Van Gogh's shadow, author Willem-Jan Verlinden shines a light on the artist's sisters – Anna, Lies and Willemien. Using previously unpublished letters between the siblings, it chronicles their aspirations, discussions about art, relationships and the hardships that they all went through.
The book follows each sister’s life from Anna's employment as a governess to Lies' spiral into poverty forcing her to sell some of her brother's paintings and finally feminist Willemien, who struggled with her mental health and was institutionalised for many years.
